Calling All SFG Shutterbugs

We are busy this summer working on our next book. But we need your help with taking photos of all the great veggies that you can grow in a Square Foot Garden! We are looking for photos from your just sprouting sprouts… to harvesting your delicious, healthy veggies… and even prepping and storing your harvest.

Guidelines for the veggie photos submitted:

  1. Each photo needs to focus on just 1 type of plant and/or square, not the entire garden. Close ups are great!
  2. Grid and/or garden box should be visible somewhere in the photo
  3. For root crop harvesting photos, please take a photo just after it has been harvested before cleaning it up.

Garden Photos:

Have a beautiful, bountiful garden this summer? Send us a photo and it might make it into the book too!

Please submit your photos to the following email: Please enter “Book Photo” in the subject line.

All photos submitted become the property of Square Foot Gardening Foundation. Submissions shall be treated as being free of restrictions and limitations on their use, reproduction, and publication. Any photos used in the book will need to have a property photo release signed and/or a model release for any person(s) in the photo. All photos used will get photo credits in the book.

When is Corn Ready to Harvest?

Growing corn this summer? If you are and you’re not sure when it’s ready, you can do a quick check by peeling back the shuck and piercing a kernel with your fingernail. If the juice looks milky, your corn is ready. If the juice is clear, give the corn a little more time.

Lemon Berry Tart

Lemon Berry TartTry this easy Lemon Berry Tart with your Fourth of July menu! We took a few shortcuts with the recipe this week by using a few store-bought ingredients since we were short on time but you could replace them with homemade crust and pastry cream. Get the kiddos in the kitchen to help you out with this treat, my 8-year-old loved using the berries to create a firework pattern. Happy Independence Day from the Square Foot Gardening Foundation!

  • 1 refrigerated 9″ pie crust, softened for 15 minutes
  • 3 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 6 oz. plain greek yogurt
  • 1 box instant lemon pudding (4 serving size, any flavor will work, use your imagination!)
  • 1 c. milk
  • Assortment of berries (we used blueberries, strawberries and raspberries for our patriotic theme)

Bake pie crust in a tart pan as package directs, cool completely.

Mix cream cheese with a whisk until smooth. Add remaining filling ingredients (yogurt, pudding and milk), stir until combined. Pour into cooled pie shell. Refrigerate 1 hour or until set.

Top with mixed berries and serve. *The kids can have some fun here by using the berries to create patriotic patterns!*

Harriet Barber House

Harriet Barber House

Harriet-Barber-House-3Last Saturday Jenny traveled to the historic Harriet Barber House in Hopkins, SC for a Youth field day event. For the event Jenny installed a 3×3 box and had the children help plant corn, watermelon, onions, and beans. The children were eager to get their hands dirty and were excited to learn how they could grow veggies at home in their backyards!
