About Us

Square Foot Gardening creator Mel Bartholomew started the Square Foot Gardening Foundation in 1996. The Square Foot Gardening Method helps position the individual gardener for growth, and the Square Foot Gardening Foundation’s grant program helps support local and global organizations as we all work to increase food security—one square foot at a time—so more families and communities can become full, fulfilled, and flourish.

We Encourage

For more than 20 years, the Foundation has continued Mel’s vision by encouraging new gardeners to learn about the Square Foot Method.

We Educate

Our seasonal newsletters, videos and monthly emails along with our SFG books show first timers how to grow their own organic veggies.

We Unite

Our Certified Instructor program prepares gardeners to teach SFG around the world. To find a Certified Instructor (CI) near you, use our map locator.

We Support

The Foundation makes grants to other nonprofits with aligned missions to encourage gardening, plant-based living, self-sufficiency, and low-impact food production.
