The uncertainty of resource constraints, civil unrest, and natural disasters makes the job of feeding the world’s growing population extremely challenging. This is exacerbated by rapid population growth, which the United Nations estimates will increase 7.7 billion in 2021 to nearly 11 billion by the year 2100.
Making nutritious food available both internationally and in low-income communities in the U.S. is a vexing problem but one the Square Foot Gardening Foundation believes it can help address.
By utilizing small parcels of land with simple soil management techniques, both land and water requirements are minimized. These techniques also require less time and effort than traditional gardening methods, in part due to enhanced weed management and simple crop rotational practices.
For decades, this Square Foot Gardening Method has taken hold globally in urban and suburban community gardens and in extreme climate conditions from drought to tropical rain forest. These accomplishments, which have occurred on rooftops, in abandoned lots and plots of all shapes and sizes, have been supported by the Foundation’s grant programs and Certified Instructors, who teach others these simple steps. The Foundation’s goal is to continue expanding the adoption of this gardening method, connect people and communities, and increase the production of nutritious and sustainable produce.
